On behalf of the Johannes Gutenberg University, its faculty, staff, and students, I would like to welcome you to our University's web site. Located in Mainz, a city of both tradition and progress, our University is one of the largest in Germany, and it is the research center of the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate. We attract students and scholars from all over the world, we hold national conferences, and regularly host international symposia on a wide spectrum of academic fields. Named after the famous fifteenth-century printer who revolutionized printing with movable types, the Johannes Gutenberg University combines stimulating academic diversity with excellent research structures: About 500 professors and 2,300 members of our academic staff research and teach in our eleven departments and 150 institutes.
